Their functioning involves passing charcoal-heated air through the tobacco mix before passing it through a water-filled chamber before delivering smoke directly to a tube and mouthpiece for consumption.
Though hookahs may appear as a healthier alternative to cigarettes, recent studies have demonstrated they contain high concentrations of nicotine and tar. Furthermore, hookah smoking increases the likelihood of oral and esophageal cancers, lung disease, and other adverse health outcomes.
Research suggests that prolonged hookah smoking increases cardiovascular disease risk by decreasing FEV1/FVC ratio and raising oxidative stress markers, decreasing lung diffusing capacity, lowering nitric oxide synthase activity in airways, leading to eosinophilic inflammation [109].
Hookah use has been linked with lower birth weight in newborns and an increase in neonatal respiratory distress and infections, yet pregnant women commonly smoke hookah during gestation despite its associated risks. Therefore, new and more stringent policies need to be created that regulate hookah smoking among youth as well as during gestation.
4. Smoking Alternatives
Smoking alternatives may help people break their addiction to nicotine. They work by decreasing cravings and providing something else to do when feeling the urge to smoke, plus they don’t require as much time commitment than cigarettes – making them the ideal solution when cravings strike!
Clove cigarettes are one of the more popular alternatives to smoking, made of tobacco blended with clove oils and additives. Though considered safer than regular cigarettes, clove cigarettes still contain harmful tar and chemicals that may pose health risks; additionally, secondhand smoke from clove cigarettes may spread diseases to non-smokers in close proximity.
To avoid smoking alternatives from becoming replacements for traditional cigarettes, it’s essential to create a new morning routine and stock healthy snacks like sugar-free gum, mints, or nuts in the locations where tobacco products were stored. This way when the urge arises for a cigarette you have an alternative readily available – although better alternatives to smoking don’t contain burning tobacco they still carry risks; to remain truly tobacco free the best solution would be quitting altogether.
